Dani sat in the waiting room of her doctor’s office, her feet up on a cushion, and wondered if an end was in sight. She prayed the numbers would improve and she’d be allowed to move around her own apartment for a while, at least.

Kade squeezed her hand, as if sensing her impatience. It had been three days since Jason had spoken with him, and there had been no word, which made her think Jeff was too upset to consider bringing Kade back to work for him. The worry which had only occasionally entered Kade’s eyes before was almost a constant companion now. Didn’t they have enough on their plates without adding his family troubles?

The nurse finally came for them, and Dani let Kade help her stand.

This time when the doctor entered, she was smiling. “Much better. I like this log with the blood pressures, and there aren’t as many proteins in your urine anymore. “

“Does that mean I don’t have to lie in bed all day anymore?” Dani asked hopefully.

“It means you can walk around for five minutes every hour if you’d like. If things continue to go well, we’ll adjust again. I still want you to keep track of her blood pressure twice a day, though,” she said to Kade, who nodded.

“Now, time for another sonogram.”

The doctor called the technician and they did the sonogram. The tech smiled a moment after the image came through. “Have you decided if you want to know the genders?”

“Can you tell?” Dani asked. She wanted to know, but Kade had been waffling on the issue.

“I can with this one.”

Dani met Kade’s eyes and he chuckled. “She’s dying to know, so I guess I’ll go along with it. What gender is Baby A?”

“Baby A is a boy.” The technician moved the stylus and settled some on baby B. A few minutes passed before she nodded. “I’m ninety percent sure we’ve got a little girl for the second one.”

Dani hugged Kade. “One of each— is it going to be better or worse than having two of the same gender, do you think?”

“Oh, better. She can tell embarrassing stories about him growing up to all of the girls he likes, and he can harass her about the amount of time she spends in the bathroom primping every morning,” he said.

“Or maybe it’ll be the other way around, maybe he’ll embarrass her, and he’ll be the one primping. Some guys are like that, you know.”

He chuckled squeezing her shoulder again. “Either way, I’m happy with what we’re getting.”

Dani watched the joy in his face as he turned his attention back to the monitor.

She let her mind wander to the night of her attack and her senses were filled with the smell of gasoline, tires, and the thin oil her attacker has worn on his skin. Her breath shuddered in and she was glad when Kade touched her arm and drew her attention back to him. She stared at him for a moment as she pushed the thoughts from her mind.
